There's a sucker born every minute -
And John Locke knows who you are. You are an author who has a great story or unique idea, and Locke is trying to sell you a template that worked for him and has no hope of working for you.
When one person implements a unique idea, it works for that person. But when everyone uses the same template, it becomes old and stale, and it is not going to work nearly as effectively, if at all.
Locke's system, in a nutshell, is to set goals (always a great idea), write a book, get it into print, create a website, create a blog, build a mailing list of people who will buy your next book, and most important, get 100 quality Twitter followers. When you attain these 100 quality Twitter followers (about 3 months of 24/7 work, by the way), that's when you send out tweets filled with hashtags and links about your heartfelt, life-changing blog, and that's when everyone on Twitter will "discover" you.
Forget about that ever happening -- so many of your followers are tweeting so many links and hashtags that your tweets will be steamrolled into oblivion. You will never be discovered on Twitter.
The rest of Locke's book is shameless self promotion -- fully half the content are stories from his past, his current writing, his websites, how much his fans love him, how great it is to be a bestselling author, and more personal accolades. His system could have been summarized with a pamphlet, but he implores you to read the book cover to cover so you can read about every book he's ever written in the hopes you will buy his other books.
Bravo, Mr. Locke! Game, set and match -- you've fooled us all.
Save yourself some money and frustration, and Google "ways to promote an eBook" (using the quotes) and you'll get all the free advice you need from the 10,300 results. Unique advice is worth nothing when everyone's doing the same thing; that's the fallacy of a fad. You want a bestseller? You want to go viral? Work very hard and think of a unique marketing system, as Locke did. I applaud him for his sales numbers and his brilliance in marketing himself, which is why I am giving him 2 stars, but no one should expect to repeat his success.
And to prove that last sentence, this is me shamelessly promoting my eBook on a heavily trafficked site: Taking Conservatives Behind the Woodshed: The Right Has Never Been So Wrong
Does it work? No, it doesn't. Because you're smart enough to know that link is there to sell you something, which is what everyone on Twitter and the Internet also knows. They're not clicking either.
